Shades Not Included, released in February 2022, gave newcomer artist Ben Schnuck his first official Magic commission: five hand-drawn basics reimagining Magic through the lens of 1980s synthwave, all screaming synths and neon horizon lines. Schnuck had been developing the style as unofficial fan art before landing the gig — coincidentally finishing the concept around the same time Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's stylistically similar announcement was in the works, forcing him to race to distinguish his take.
